Fog formation on food packaging films is disliked by consumers, it induces product spoilage, and ultimately can negatively effect buying behavior. In the refrigerated space in the store, when the temperature outside the package drops below the dew point of the head space air or water vapor in the package, condensation takes place. This forms condensed droplets of water on the inside of the film surface, resulting in visible fog. Fortunately, there are a couple ways to minimize this “fogging” on the film. One way is to incorporate internal anti-fog additives, blending them into the film itself. Another method is to apply external topical coatings. Both processes enable the reduction of surface tension of the water droplets responsible for unsightly fog. This results in non-scattering, smooth, microscopic particles of water spreading over the entire interior surface of the film, thereby preventing the formation of single tiny droplets. As the name “anti-fog” suggests, this helps with the overall visibility of the product, as it prevents any clouding on the film when filling the container or when its displayed in the store. However, with antifog solutions, there is a potential for the coating to weaken the heat seal of the film to the packaging substrate. That is where the expertise of Teinnovations is key.

Anti-fog packaging: Things to Consider
- Anti-fog packaging provides better visibility of the contents inside of the packaging.
- The film contains anti fog coating or antifog additives mixed with the film during manufacturing of the film. This reduces the size of water droplets into a microscopic size
- While the consumer-friendly coating reduces the fog appearance and makes the product more visible, it can weaken the seal. We provided films that maintain a good balance for both.
