How to Choose a Packaging Partner: The Questions Worth Asking Before You Commit

Most people don’t think about their packaging supplier until something goes wrong and by then you’re locked in and switching is a pain. So it pays to ask the uncomfortable questions early, before you’ve signed anything.

(Not sure you even need a dedicated packaging partner yet? Start with [What Is a Packaging Consultant and Why Do I Need One?],  then come back here when you’re ready to choose one.)

The catch is that in a sales pitch, most suppliers sound identical. Everybody’s quality-focused. Everybody puts the customer first. The trick is asking things that can’t be answered with a tagline. Here are the ones that matter:

How do you approach a problem you’ve never seen before?

Any supplier can handle the routine stuff. What separates a real partner is how they respond to something that doesn’t fit a standard mold. So describe a challenge you’re genuinely stuck on and pay attention to the shape of their answer. Do they immediately name a product, or do they ask what your product is made of, how it ships, where it’s sold, what’s gone wrong so far? A partner worth having treats your problem as a puzzle to understand before it’s a sale to close.

Are you certified and can you back it up?

Easy to overlook, expensive to get wrong. If your product touches food, your packaging’s safety is part of your product’s safety. Ask whether a partner holds a current, recognized certification like SQF. It’s not just a safety thing, either: plenty of big retailers won’t shelve a product if the supplier behind it isn’t certified, so this can impact where you’re allowed to sell. (Want to understand what that certification actually involves? Here’s [What Is SQF and Why Does It Matter When You Choose a Packaging Partner].)

How much can you really do?

Some problems call for a film, some for a different container, some for new equipment or a combination of all three. When a supplier only makes one thing, every problem somehow turns out to be solvable with that one thing. A partner with real range can point you to the right answer instead of the only one they stock. Ask what they handle in-house and what they’d farm out.

What happens when I’m in a bind?

Everything’s smooth until it isn’t. Anybody looks good when it’s easy, what you want to know is how they operate when the clock’s running. Ask about a time they pulled a customer out of a jam. How they answer tells you what they’ll be like on your worst day, not just your best.

Are you going to be around in a few years?

The best packaging relationships are long ones. Getting a solution dialed in takes time and hopping suppliers every couple of years means paying that cost over and over. So look for whether their customers stick around and if they’re built to grow with you or just fill this one order.

What it all comes down to

Notice what these questions have in common: almost none of them are about products. They’re about how a company thinks, how it treats you, and how it solves the challenges you throw at it. The right partner is the one who gets your problem, has the range and credentials to fix it, shows up when things go sideways and plans to still be here next year and the years after that.

That’s the bar we set at Teinnovations. We’re SQF certified, we work across films, containers, and equipment and we’ve spent 25 years being the people customers call when the problem is a hard one. If you’re weighing your options, ask us these same questions. We’ll answer every one. Bring us the problem, and we’ll bring the solution.
