How Packaging Has Changed in 25 Years and What Hasn’t Changed

When Teinnovations opened its doors 25 years ago, the packaging world was a very different place. The options were narrower, the technology was simpler, and a lot of the problems producers faced just didn't have good answers yet. A quarter-century later, it's remarkable to look back and see how much has changed.

Shelf life went from guesswork to science. Twenty-five years ago, extending the life of a fresh product often meant reaching for preservatives or simply accepting a short window. Today, tools like modified atmosphere packaging, high-barrier films, and High Pressure Processing(HPP) helps us keep products fresher for longer.

Sustainability moved from afterthought to priority. For much of the industry's history, packaging was designed around cost and protection. Now, recyclable materials, right-sized designs, and a genuine push to reduce waste are central to the conversation. Consumers expect it, regulators increasingly require it, and the materials have finally caught up enough to deliver on it without sacrificing performance.

Waste became something to design out, not accept. This is one of the biggest shifts of all. For decades, a certain amount of waste from overpacked products, oversized formats or spoilage from bad packaging was just considered the cost of doing business. That thinking is gone. Today, tightening up waste is a core goal, and it runs in two directions at once: reducing the packaging material itself through right-sizing and smarter design, and reducing product waste by extending its usable life. Both save money and both are better for the planet. It's an area we focus on closely with our customers.

Customization became the standard, not the exception. A generation ago, most producers fit their products into whatever packaging already existed. Today, the expectation has flipped, packaging is built around the specific product, its journey, and its audience. The rise of custom formats, specialty films and purpose-built solutions has changed what's possible.

Consumers started buying with their eyes and their values. Transparency, clean labels, visible freshness, packaging that signals quality at a glance: these weren't major factors 25 years ago. Now they can make or break a product on a crowded shelf.

One more thing that sets today apart: the science behind the solution. Twenty-five years ago, packaging decisions were often made by trial and error. Today, getting it right takes real expertise. It requires understanding how a product behaves, what threatens it, and how the right materials and methods respond. That’s why we brought food science in house. Rather than guessing or outsourcing the hard questions, we can study a product directly and engineer a solution for its weak spots. That in-house capability is one of the things that sets us apart, and it's a big part of how we solve problems.

Here's what hasn't changed.

Through all of the changes, the way we approach a problem has stayed exactly the same. Sit down with the customer. Understand what they're actually up against. Build the right, individualized solution. That was true on our very first day, and it's just as true now. Bring us the problem and we'll bring the solution.

25 years, and we're just getting started.

Thank you to every customer and partner who has been part of this journey. The packaging world will keep changing and we'll keep doing what we've always done: solving the problems that matter, one product at a time. Here's to the next chapter.
